What They Actually Are
Granite is natural stone, cut from the earth in slabs. Every piece is one of a kind — the veining and mineral patterns in your counter exist nowhere else. Quartz (the countertop kind, not the crystal) is engineered: about 90 percent ground quartz stone mixed with resins and pigments, pressed into slabs. That difference — natural vs. engineered — drives everything else.
Durability in Real Kitchens
Both handle daily cooking well, with different strengths. Quartz is non-porous, so it resists stains from coffee, wine, and turmeric without sealing — a real advantage for busy families. It is slightly less heat-tolerant than granite; a screaming-hot pan straight from the burner can damage the resin, so trivets are a habit worth building. Granite handles heat better and is extremely hard, but it is porous — it needs periodic sealing, and an unsealed spill of red wine left overnight can leave a mark.
Looks and Consistency
Granite's selling point is uniqueness: dramatic veining, mineral flecks, depth that changes in the light. Its risk is also uniqueness — the slab you fall in love with at the yard is the slab you get, and the sample chip will not show the full picture. Quartz offers consistency: the sample is the slab, and patterns range from clean solid whites to convincing marble looks. If you want a specific veined look without the marble maintenance, quartz delivers it.
Maintenance Reality
Quartz: wipe with soap and water, no sealing, ever. Granite: wipe with soap and water, plus sealing every year or so — a simple wipe-on job that takes an afternoon. Both should avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive pads. Neither needs the babying that marble demands.
Which Should You Choose?
Choose quartz if you want low maintenance, stain resistance, and a predictable pattern — the practical family's pick. Choose granite if you want a one-of-a-kind natural stone, love the depth of real mineral pattern, and do not mind an annual sealing. There is no wrong answer; there is only the answer that fits how you cook and clean. We keep samples of both and will put them in your kitchen's light so you can decide with your eyes, not a brochure.
